Safety, made
visible.
Aloka is a living map of how streets feel — hour by hour, verified by the people who walk them.

What maps don’t tell you
21:00 — THE PROBLEM
Maps tell you where.
Never how it feels when you get there.
So we ask friends, guess, or worry.
67%
of women worldwide said they felt safe walking alone at night, compared with 78% of men.
22:10 — THE LIGHTMAP
Light is the data.
Where conditions are good and confirmed, streets glow. Where we don't know yet, they're simply dark — never condemned.
- Open city dataMapped streetlights, OpenStreetMap lighting tags, Overture places and published opening hours. The map is useful on day one, with nobody signed up.
- Community LanternsTwenty-second structured check-ins from people verifiably nearby — lighting, activity, sightlines. Never a review of a person.
- Confidence you can seeDense agreement renders sharp. Thin or conflicting data renders diffuse. The map shows how sure it is, not just what it thinks.

22:30 — THE DIAL
The city changes. Most maps don’t.
Aloka renders every hour on its own, because a street at noon and the same street at eleven at night are not the same place.
Midday. Every street looks the same.

Step 1 of 5
Where are you?
Janpath, near Connaught Place
On-site ✓
Your device confirmed you're within about 150 metres. We keep the yes — never the coordinates.
A working check-in. Nothing you enter here is sent anywhere.
00:10 — LANTERNS
Twenty seconds. Six questions.
No rants. No descriptions of people. Just conditions — lighting, activity, sightlines — from someone verifiably nearby.
- On-site proof without stored location
- We check once that you're within about 150 metres. What the check returns is a yes or a no. The coordinates are discarded in memory and never written down — there is no location-history table to leak.
- Three people, or no glow
- Community light appears only where at least three separate verified contributors agree. One account, however determined, cannot light or dim a street.
- Anomaly detection
- Every cell's history is watched for sudden shifts, so a coordinated push shows up as an anomaly instead of as light. Photos are stripped of EXIF and have faces and plates blurred before a human ever reviews them.
01:00 — THE ROUTES
A little more time, if you want it.
Aloka routes you through light, not around anywhere. You see both walks, both times, and the reason for the difference — then you choose.
On this walk: about 4 sec more, with 5 percentage points more recorded lighting coverage.
Route order is never for sale. Read the Manifesto

Choose a walk on the live map02:00 — WHAT WE REFUSE
Five promises we can be held to.
Written down before launch, in public, so that breaking one is a thing you can point at.
Safety data is free, forever.
Money never touches the map — no sponsored scores, no sponsored routes.
We map conditions, not people.
We don’t store your location history.
When we don’t know, the map says so.
05:48 — FIRST LIGHT
Five ordinary evenings.
None of these need a map of danger. They need to know what a street is like at the hour they'll be standing in it.
The 10:47 PM commute
The last stretch home from the metro, taken on the road with working lights instead of the shortcut that saves four minutes.
Walk shown at 22:00. 50% has no usable lighting evidence.
The hotel booked sight-unseen
Two rooms, one price. One of them is a five-minute walk along a main road that is busy until midnight.
Walk shown at 21:00. 79% has no usable lighting evidence.
The first week in a new city
A flat that looked fine at noon, seen again at eleven at night — before signing anything.
Walk shown at 23:00. 76% has no usable lighting evidence.
The night shift
A 4 AM walk from the ward to the car park, on the route that is genuinely busy at 4 AM.
Walk shown at 04:00. 100% has no usable lighting evidence.
The kid's walk home
The clocks went back an hour, so the same walk is now a different walk. The map already knows.
Walk shown at 18:00. 74% has no usable lighting evidence.
